Cisco General Counsel on State of Technology in the Law

   Posted by: admin   in Cisco

The legal industry sometimes seems not to be at the forefront of industries being transformed by technology. Mark Chandler is our SVP and General Counsel and today in San Diego, CA he gave a luncheon speech at the Northwestern School of Law’s 34th Annual Securities Regulation Institute. The conference brings together national leaders in securities law, accounting and government. The keynote address was from SEC Chairman Chris Cox.

All of us at Cisco are tasked with using technology to make us more productive and more efficient and the legal group is no different. Among his chief legal officer duties, Chandler is tasked with utilizing technology to streamline legal processes and embed technology into the legal systems and processes that he implements. Clearly, there are legal hurdles as well as technological ones with this approach. In his speech today, Chandler talked about some of the challenges and opportunities utilizing technology in the law . He notes that the legal industry sometimes seems to be “the last vestige of the medieval guild system to survive into the 21st century” and ends his speech saying to the nearly 500 at the conference, “The opportunity is there to recognize the business realities that will be driven by new cisco technology. We can seize the chance to offer more value to clients. We can seize the opportunity for our own employees to be more engaged and productive.”

So, here is Mark Chandler’s speech on the “State of Technology in the Law.” The Wall Street Journal’s Law Blog calls it, ”a speech worth reading.” I hope you enjoy it.

Cisco Certification Recertification

   Posted by: admin   in Cisco

A successful Cisco Certification student will retain the Cisco certification for two years only, in
the case of Specialist certifications, and three years only, in the case of Associate and Professional certifications. After this period the student must recertify their Cisco certification by retaking and passing the current exams for that certification, or by taking and passing the Cisco exams at a higher certification level. The Certified Internetwork Expert certification does not require recertification.

Cisco Examinations
The Cisco examinations vary from one certification to another although some exams are credit towards more than one certification. The examinations also vary in difficulty from one level of certification to the next. These examinations can be approximately between one and two hours long. The prices for these examinations also differ; though most will set you back approximately $125 US per examination for most exams and $300 USD for the CCIE certification exams. The examinations are usually computer based, proctored and delivered in a secure environment, although certain of the CCIE certifications also have a lab component to its requirements. Registration for Cisco examinations can be done on the Internet or by telephone in the United States and Canada. Alternatively you can visit www.prometric.com to locate your nearest testing center where you can register.

Preparing for a Cisco Certification:
Proper preparation is important for any Cisco certification. There are plenty of Cisco Certification study materials that you can use in preparation for your certification exams. These include the official Cisco Training courses and official Cisco Self Study Training Guides from Cisco Press, as well as Cisco braindumps that are available online. Generally, you should be familiar with the topics tested in the certification exam and should have some hands-on experience to be in good stead for any certification exam.

The certification you choose will be very dependant upon your current position or planned career path. Microsoft certifications are designed to take advantage of specific skills and enhance your expertise.

So what is your job title? The information below should help you decide what certification path is right for you.

Software Application Developer

The MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) and MCPD (Microsoft Certified Professional Developer) certifications are for you. The MCPD establishes you as an expert developing on a variety of platforms using Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. The MCAD encompasses the application lifecycle from development to maintenance. If you are interested in analysis and design, go for the MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer). An MCSD has full knowledge of the application lifecycle from analysis through design, development, testing and maintenance.

Systems Engineer

Depending upon the level of knowlege you need, an MCSE or MCSA are great choices. The MCSE is an industry standard and provides the skills to do everything from analysis of business requirements to design and implementation of infrastructures. The MCSA is one step down and takes out the analysis and design, focusing on managing and troubleshooting system environments.

IT Business Analyst

A Microsoft Office Master combined with a MCP or MCSD would be very useful for most business analysts. An Office Specialist certification would demonstrate expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products. A MCP would be a great starting point for additional certifications. Be sure to choose an exam that will apply to any future cert tracks you may take. The MCSD would be the ultimate certification because it encompases the entire application lifecycle from analysis through design, development, testing and maintenance.

Systems Analyst

As a Systems Analyst you will perform many rolls and could need a MCAD or MCSD depending upon which stages of the application lifecycle you will need to know. The MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) encompasses the application lifecycle from development to maintenance. However, for an analyst, the MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer) may be necessary to encompass the full application lifecycle from analysis through design, development, testing and maintenance.

Software Engineer

As a MCSD you would be the decisive expert on all aspects of the application lifecycle. You would know how to design and develop using Microsoft development tools, technologies, and platforms. As an MCSE you would have the knowledge to do the analysis, design, and implementation of infrastructures. Depending upon the demands of your job or where you want to go with your career, either of these certs is an excellent choice.

Database Analyst/Administrator Web Application Developers Internet Developers

The obvious choice is the MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator). It is the most respected certification for those who are responsible for the implementation and administration of Microsoft SQL Server databases.

Technical Consultant

Depending upon your career path and direction there are several certifications that would enhance your skill set. Start with an MCTS which will target a Microsoft technology and continue to the MCITP, which will demonstrate your skills in hanling all aspects of IT infrastructure.

Another route would be to get an MCTS and continue to the MCSD, MCSA, or MCSE. As a MCSD you would be the decisive expert on all aspects of the application lifecycle. You would know how to design and develop using Microsoft development tools, technologies, and platforms. As an MCSE you would have the knowledge to do the analysis, design, and implementation of infrastructures. The MCSA is one step down from the MCSE and takes out the analysis and design, focusing on managing and troubleshooting system environments.

Network Adminstrator

The MSCE is targeted to any Network Administrator who uses Microsoft Windows and backoffice applications. As an MCSE you would have the knowledge to do the analysis, design, and implementation of infrastructures.

An article from from a blog by trikah@microsoft.com, which may be helpful:

Microsoft MCP mentors is a cool new program some people around here are cooking up, through which our certified community helps others get started in IT. To participate in this pilot, it makes most sense if you are in eastern U.S. or Canada, so you’re in the same time zone. But more on that later…

Share your stories and help build the MCP community! Become an MCP Mentor.

As an experienced MCP, you have many stories–of both successes and failures. There was the time when the new guy brought down the entire system. The time you spent an entire week troubleshooting that elusive problem. And the time you completed your task in record time. Microsoft Learning invites you to share your stories, skills, and experience to make a difference in someone’s life as an MCP Mentor.

How It Works

The MCP Mentor Program matches an experienced Microsoft Certified Professional (you) with someone new to IT and studying to pass their first Microsoft Certification exam (your mentee). Through the program, your real-world perspective, technical skills, and community connections can help others overcome the experience gap to complete a path to proven skills, new career opportunities, and confidence.

As an MCP Mentor, you will share real-world experience with your mentee about objectives that are covered by the Microsoft Certification exam, helping to build self-confidence about his or her technical skills and preparedness. You will meet regularly with your mentee by phone or e-mail. In addition, you and your mentee will have access to an online community to share best practices, tips, and study tools. The online community also helps you and your mentee connect with other IT professionals of diverse experience, perspectives, and backgrounds.

Volunteer For The Pilot At Walter Reed Army Medical Center, United States
Microsoft Learning is running a pilot of this program in conjunction with the IT Academy that is associated with Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The soldiers in this IT Academy program are recovering from recent injuries and waiting to find out if they will be discharged from the military. Most of these soldiers enter the IT Academy program with little or no experience in IT.

The MCP Mentor Program is not intended to be a replacement for training, but instead to supplement training. An experienced MCT supports these soldiers in their preparation. But these soldiers would benefit greatly from the kind of 1:1 mentoring relationship that you can provide. We need volunteer mentors to help these soldiers build the skills that are validated on their target exam(s), enter the IT profession, and join the MCP community. We are specifically looking for:

-IT professionals (vs. developers) with experience on MCDST exams 70-271 and 70-272

- Commitment of 2-4 hours per month over a 3-6 month period
- Local to mid-Atlantic United States preferred

How To Participate
If you are interested in volunteering, go to http://connect.microsoft.com and enter this Invitation ID to fill out an application survey: MNTR-CGPX-QQKK. If you have questions about this program, you can contact the MCP Mentor Program administrators at mcpmntr@microsoft.com
